I recently stumbled across a video discussing the Video Game Crash of 1983. I enjoyed it and I figured I'd share it with you all:

I remember reading that story in one of my books based on the history of video games.

I heard about it. I was too young back then to remember it. Interesting view of the situation.Atari had a weird way lead the video game business industry back then. It is a wonder that they rise so high with this type of management.

Mais ça l'a permit à Nintendo de percer en Amérique deux ans plus tard.

S.P.P.

At least 3rd parties are not making new consoles left and right like they used to. Now its just Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft who makes them.

Excellent study in market economics.

Thanks for heads up!

To think that without these events though, the industry would probably have failed sooner than later.

Damn straight. I would offer some form of intellectual comment to dignify how bad things got out of hand what with the technological flow was going and how every company was going for the 'futuristic' look that is now considered retro, but my brain is half dead at the moment.

Overall, an interesting watch.

Even with such a drastic change, companies now have their own fair share of problems that might even lead up to another crash of Game companies in the near future. What with how each game console now struggles to strive and remain on top in the sales, who can say that the next gen. gaming systems will cause a crash on the sudden switch and exectation of the loyal customers? Sure, there's a few consoles that are widely recognized today, but when the new ones come out, what's gonna haopen?

I think that the next big crash might be caused as a result of too many DLC related content through the web. Its pretty much the same thing.

Indeed... Some of these DLCs are a bit much. Who'd want to pay for something like a patch for a new set of clothes for a character or an "extension" that is basically just two or three additional levels that are way too short?

Not to mention that they charge you with 10-15 dollars per DLC. Its bad enough that you have to buy games at $60, but then they have to constantly raise the bar by adding 2-4 packs so you are really paying about $100. So they are trying to make us pay for their mistakes by releasing to us an incomplete game. I understand in some games, that is acceptable. The map packs in halo 3 have always been welcome (Reach.... meh), and to some extent, But Modern Warefare is a true disappointment. They essentially ask us to pay not only the cost of the game, but another 60 dollars for that additional service, which only lasts a year, and even then their maps are subpar.

Well, the problem I see with DLC's is that they're just that. DLC's. Downloadable content now plays a major role in games seeing as people go gaga over such things and must always have one edge over another. I swear I have not heard the end of people who brag about having CoD Elite and that they are obviously better than others (( How that logic works is beyond my brain capacity. )). Some games have acceptable DLC, while others are flat out outrageous. DLC's that you'd find perfectly place are things like the ones Mass Effect released. I mean, hell, they released one to unlock the last living Prothean as soon as the games hit the shelves, maybe even earlier if anyone was actually keeping track of that. Other DLC's though, are just done terrible.

I mean, paying 1200 Microsoft points for a tiny map and better re-skins of weapons is pretty stupid and a liberal waste of money. Then again, there are the 'die hard fans' so either way, those companies are making money and since this ain't the stone age, they won't just re-call every CoD Disk made, toss it on the steam roller and dump it in a hole to fill with cement and call it a landfill. I wouldn't use the term incomplete game, but more like... extension. Some suck while others actually relate to gameplay and are worthwhile the monetary expense.

I'm not saying that all games are labeled as 'incomplete', but I see what you are saying considering that the way I had said it. Alot of games do have the premise to actually bring out DLC. Right now its not just the console wars that are going on, but the Indie games are on the rise too. As far as everything goes, the more popular ones will eventually end up on the consoles, ala xbox with minecraft.

The way I see it, games will eventually be downloaded, replacing the CD and/or cartridge. As to how long it may take for that to happen, it could be years before that happens.
